The 13 th Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) ng Iloilo approved the grant of financial assistance for Ilonggo Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs).
Entitled “An Ordinance Providing Financial Assistance to Repatriated Overseas Filipino Workers and Providing Funds Thereof,” a total of P21 Million pesos was earmarked. Author of this Ordinance is 3rd District Board Member Jason Gonzales.
“There will be an allocation of 4.2 million pesos per district in order that the overseas Filipino workers will be given 10,000 pesos each,” said Gonzales.
The OFW, as beneficiary, must be a resident of the Province of Iloilo who was displaced and lost a job due to political unrest, civil war, natural calamities, experienced maltreatment from foreign employer, has sickness, or was involved in an accident.
In order for an OFW to receive this financial assistance, he must fill up an application form, present his flight ticket or boarding pass, proof of overseas employment, proof of work displacement and execute a sworn affidavit stating that no financial or credit assistance was received from host country. He must also submit repatriation documents and barangay residency certificate.
“Not all OFWs are earning a ‘six figures’ salary or income and most of the domestic workers are earning less than 25,000 pesos a month,” Gonzales added.
There are more than 17,000 Ilonggo OFWs who went home in the past months. Many families have just gotten out from poverty but because of the pandemic they would again experience the same hardship in life.
The Ordinance was co-authored by Fourth District Senior Board Member Rolando Distura and co-sponsored by Vice Governor Christine "Tingting" Garin. Other co-sponsors are Board Members Domingo Oso, Jr., Dorothy Paes, Ramon Sullano, Nielito Tupas, Carol-V Espinosa-Diaz, Matt Palabrica, June Mondejar, Rolito Cajilig, and Renee Valencia.
