Vice Governor Christine "Tingting" Garin congratulates the Iloilo Provincial Agriculture Office, thru the able leadership of Dr. Ildefonso Toledo, on the successful holding of the first Farmers' Week celebration.
In the radio program Sanggunian In Action, Vice Governor Garin explained that the holding of Provincial Farmers" Week was based on Provincial Ordinance No. 2018-190 which declares the first week of October every year as Farmers' Week.
The ordinance was authored and passed thru the effort of 1st District Board Member Marcelo Valentine Serag when he was still the chairman of the Committee on Agriculture", Garin said.
Due to COVID-19 pandemic, she said, the celebration was not realized but now she was happy that the ordinance was implemented. The good thing about the celebration was the focus given to the farmers and fisher folks whose sector is so important.
"The celebration of Farmers' Week is a way of letting the farmers and fisher folks feel how they are giving value by the province of Iloilo", added Garin.
SUPPORT THE PRODUCTS OF IP COMMUNITY
The Farmers' Week celebration was a big opportunity for the Panay Bukidnon Indigenous Peoples to showcase their products.
Vice Governor Christine "Tingting" Garin said that many products of fisher folks and farmers were displayed at the Capitol lobby and outside of the capitol. Many employees and people around the area bought fruits, vegetables, ornamental plants, dried fish, and many displayed products, including farm equipment, seeds, and fertilizers.
Different towns participated and showcased their products to be sold.
"I have met and talked to Rita Caballero, a member of Panay Bukidnon Indigenous Peoples, who was selling intricately handcrafted apparel using panubok embroidery", said Garin.
She further explained that Rita Caballero personally made the products or the panubok embroidery which was done neatly, colorful, and with symbols related to their tribe.
Garin said that there are people who are fond of buying clothes from other places but we could help if we support the products of the IP community in our very own province of Iloilo.
