TELUS International Philippines celebrates a decade of support to communities with Brigada Eskwela in Iloilo

ILOILO CITY – TELUS International Philippines (TIP), a leading AI-fueled customer experience and business process solutions provider, is proud to celebrate its tenth year supporting public school students and teachers through the Department of Education’s (DepEd) Brigada Eskwela program. As part of the 10th anniversary celebration, the company announced the expansion of its team members’ volunteer efforts to include Iloilo as part of their annual TELUS Days of Giving (TDOG) activities.

More than 200 volunteers from TIP's Iloilo sites as well as public school teachers and students from Ramon Avanceña National High School, came together for the inaugural TDOG Brigada Eskwela volunteer effort in Iloilo. Their mission was twofold: to foster the spirit of volunteerism and to create safe and conducive learning environments for more than 4,300 high-school students and 120 educators in Iloilo ahead of the school’s re- opening in July. Volunteers engaged in activities such as painting classrooms and hallways.

"We embrace the spirit of bayanihan at TELUS International Philippines, and Brigada Eskwela is the perfect embodiment of that ethos," said Phoebe Carrera, Senior Manager of TELUS International APAC Corporate Social Responsibility. "It takes a village to educate our youth, and we consider ourselves fortunate to collaborate with teachers, parents, barangay officials and the government to address the challenges faced by local schools. After assessing multiple schools in coordination with the Division Office of Iloilo and DepEd, we selected Ramon Avanceña National High School due to the school's size and its needs that we felt could be meaningfully addressed by the number of volunteers we had participating on the day to transform the school.”

A history of commitment to Iloilo

This initiative is just one aspect of TIP's multifaceted community engagement activities since establishing its presence in Iloilo. As the company opened its first site in the province during the pandemic in 2021, TIP initiated donation drives and repacking activities, providing 20,000 learning kits and hygiene kits to 12,500 students across 17 public elementary schools in both Metro Manila and Iloilo.

TIP team members in Iloilo also actively participated in virtual volunteering, collaborating with the Asia Foundation to translate children's books into Hilgaynon in 2022. Annual blood donation drives in Iloilo, now in their third consecutive year, continue to support the Philippine Red Cross Iloilo Chapter.

In 2023, TIP's collaboration with Gawad Kalinga (GK) in Iloilo heralded transformative change in the New Lucena community, benefiting vulnerable citizens. Over 150 TELUS International Philippines team members teamed up with GK to construct homes, distribute essentials and establish a sustainable community food garden.

TIP's efforts also extend through its TELUS International Philippines Community Board, which funds USD $100,000 annually to local grassroots non-profit organizations and charitable foundations. Notable beneficiaries in Iloilo include the Walk and Work Foundation, an Iloilo Prosthetic and Rehabilitation Center, and a farming community in Sto. Tomas and Salngan, Passi City through a project with the NGO Center for Agrarian Reform and Rural Development.

As TELUS International Philippines commemorates a decade of invaluable support through Brigada Eskwela in Iloilo, its commitment extends beyond this milestone. Separate activities are already scheduled to take place in Metro Manila in July, further highlighting TELUS International Philippines’ continued dedication to nurturing the spirit of bayanihan and advancing education.
